Literature Text

Have you heard how soft
the songbird sings,
and of how he sits
so delicately in solitude?

Have you heard his song
ringing so clear and true,
above the sounds of his choir
resonating across the land?

Have you heard how soft
the songbird sings,
as he waits clad in beauty
for a mate that will never come?

The bird(s) of which this poem talks about are those exposed to radiation such as in Chernobyl. The male birds sing so much more in search of a mate that likely will not come. The female birds are more susceptible to the radiation, resulting in fewer female birds to the large male population. The males are quite literally singing a death song. They die younger with little chance of reproducing without help from uncontaminated areas.
